This series is about our trip to Italy we took in September of 2026. We rented a car and traveled the “road less traveled”. Other pages in the series listed at the bottom of this page and will have links as I write them.
After a good nights sleep on a very comfortable bed and the windows wide open to the fresh air (no screens and no bugs!), we set out to discover Pitigliano in the daylight.
Nothing monumental to report on this day except we loved the charm of Pitigliano. We walked throughout the town and went to one museum and finished with a very nice dinner at a restaurant on the far side of town. The town is not large. It’s situated on the cliffs so the natural terrain limits the growth to the edge of the cliff and no further of course!
There is very little distinction between the base of the buildings and the cliff as the bottom floors were dug into the cliffs (some house have basements dug into the cliffs under the house that are still used for natural refrigeration) and then the same material from the cliffs were used to build. It is truly beautiful and amazing.
While there are tourists, there are not nearly the number of tourists you would find in major cities like Florence or Rome. During the day, there are a couple tour buses but by late afternoon, the buses are gone and streets relaxed and plenty of room to explore and relax.

I was enjoying dinner so much I forgot to take pictures except for this tasty appetizer.

On the way home I peeked into this wine shop that is in one of the hand-dug caves along the road leading out of town. So beautiful!
